Saint Anne's Hospital Multicultural Health Committee offers scholarships
Fall River, MA – In an effort to reduce barriers and improve access to education to a culturally diverse community, Saint Anne’s Hospital's Multicultural Health Committee is offering three $1,000 scholarships to local students pursuing a health care career in the 2015-2016 academic year.
Designed to assist bilingual/bicultural students who are pursuing a career in health care, these scholarships are available to community individuals, plus Saint Anne’s Hospital employees and their immediate family members.
All scholarship candidates must be bi-cultural and/or bilingual. Community residents must be residents of the Greater Fall River area (i.e., Assonet, Dighton, Fall River, Freetown, Rehoboth, Swansea, Somerset, and Westport, plus Tiverton and Little Compton, Rhode Island). Other criteria also apply.
In addition, the Committee is also offering two new $500 scholarships for students pursuing National Medical Interpreter certification. To be eligible, candidates must have worked as a medical interpreter for two or more years; and have a certificate of completion of a 45-to-60-hour medical interpreter training. These also are open to community individuals, plus Saint Anne’s employees and their family members.
Comprising a cross-section of the area’s cultural communities and agencies, Saint Anne’s Hospital’s Multicultural Health Committee was created in 1985 to assist the hospital in reducing barriers to the multicultural community and improving its access to health education. In 1987, the committee launched the scholarship program to encourage area bilingual or bicultural students to pursue education in health care. Scholarships are available to employees of Saint Anne’s Hospital and other area students. Since its inception, the program has awarded more than $62,000 to students who are enrolled in health career education and have demonstrated leadership, bilingual and/or bicultural skills, community involvement, and financial need.
