Surgical weight loss procedures include:
- Gastric sleeve surgery, which is becoming the most common procedure, is now a routine surgery. It takes approximately 45 minutes, is often done in a community hospital, and typically requires a one-night hospital stay. Patients are back to most activities within a week. Gastric sleeve surgery is performed locally at Saint Anne's Hospital.
- Gastric bypass surgery involves creating a small pouch from the stomach and connecting the newly created pouch directly to the small intestine. Gastric bypass is performed at St. Elizabeth's Medical Center, our sister hospital in Brighton, MA.
- LAP-BAND® surgery uses an inflatable silicone device that is surgically implanted around the top portion of the stomach to help a person lose weight. This procedure is performed at St. Elizabeth's Medical Center.
If your BMI is between 30 and 35, you may benefit from medical weight loss. The Steward Center for Weight Control at Saint Anne's Hospital offers non-surgical weight loss options through a medical management program at our sister hospital, St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center. This medical weight loss program is a comprehensive program with individualized care, including weight loss medications, nutritional counseling, protein shake meal replacements, fitness advice and behavioral therapy. Your doctor can help you decide if medical weight loss is an option for you.
