Saint Anne’s Hospital invites area medical professionals to learn about working with deaf and hard-of-hearing patients

Fall River, MA – Medical professionals wishing to enhance their competency in working with patients who are deaf or hard of hearing are invited to a free program, “What Medical Professionals Need to Know about Working with Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Patients in the Medical Setting,” on Wednesday, February 25, from 12-1 p.m. at Saint Anne’s Hospital.

Sponsored by Steward Health Care, the one-hour program is part of a year-long initiative at Saint Anne’s Hospital and other Steward Health Care hospitals that is focusing on cultural diversity and inclusion.

Presented by Jonathan O’Dell, ALB, assistive technology manager and training specialist with the Massachusetts Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, the program will address issues that may arise in caring for deaf or hard-of-hearing patients.  Topics will include cultural variances in the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community; state and federal laws applying to communication access provision and reasonable accommodation and risk and liability reduction; and communication access strategies to interactions with deaf and hard-of-hearing patients

Continuing education credits will be available for physicians, registered nurses, social workers, licensed mental health counselors, and licensed alcohol and drug counselors.
