Fall River, MA – Leaders from Saint Anne’s Hospital, a part of Steward Health Care, broke ground today for Greater Fall River’s newest hospital facility that will provide dramatically increased access to private patient rooms and incorporate some of the industry’s newest architectural standards.Architect's rendering Saint Anne's Hospital patient care addition

Saint Anne’s Hospital’s new three-story, 60,000-square-foot addition (see architect's rendering, right) will add a new main entrance and 40 new patient care rooms on two floors, allowing the hospital to convert virtually all inpatient rooms throughout the hospital into private rooms while maintaining the current number of beds at the hospital. Saint Anne’s is licensed for 160 beds, including adult medical-surgical, pediatrics and geriatric psychiatry.

“One of the hallmarks of a high-quality patient experience is privacy,” said Craig Jesiolowski, president of Saint Anne’s Hospital. “While patients value our hospital’s high-quality clinical care, we know they value private rooms just as much. When this new addition is completed in late 2013, we will meet our longtime goal of nearly all private rooms. The expansion is the perfect complement to our other state-of-the-art facilities, such as the Emergency Room and operating rooms, and one that we know will provide an enhanced experience for our patients and their families.”

One floor of the new addition will house a new telemetry unit for patients who require cardiac monitoring, such as those recovering from heart attack or other illnesses or conditions that put them at risk for developing serious complications. The second floor will be designed as a medical-surgical unit for patients hospitalized for a variety of conditions and illnesses. The ground floor will be reserved for future patient care services.

  • private rooms with patient bathrooms with showers, family seating, and wood-look floors with sound-dampening features
  • two elevators for ease of access
  • strategically located nurse and staff work stations to allow for visual observation of all patient rooms
  • “clinicians’ care zones” with built-in computers in each room. These will allow nurses and other care providers to record and retrieve clinical information immediately, reducing time and minimizing noise associated with moving carts, etc.
  • special isolation rooms with state-of-the-art infection control features to prevent transmission of airborne infections
  • spacious visitor lounges and family consultation rooms

“This new addition is the latest example of our commitment to providing World Class health care in the communities where our patients live and work,” said Josh Putter, chief operating officer of Steward Health Care. “In the past two years, including this new addition, we have invested more than $64 million in new facilites, equipment and technology to benefit our patients in Fall River.”

The $30 million expansion will also create a new main entrance to the hospital, located on South Main Street. This new entrance will be designed to improve access and way-finding into and throughout the hospital. The new wing and entrance are expected to be complete in June 2013.

A new building, an all-new design
Designed by Steffian Bradley Associates and to be built by Suffolk Construction, both of Boston, the new structure will include a number of state-of-the-art design features, as well as home-like finishes to enhance comfort and privacy for patients and their families.

The new addition’s design features include a number of sustainable details, including:

  • large exterior windows to allow plentiful natural light in all patient rooms
  • acoustical controls on interior and exterior noise
  • white roof to avoid “heat island” effect and minimize impact on environment
  • low-flow fixtures and automatic shut-offs to ensure water efficiency
  • energy-efficient control systems to optimize energy performance through mechanical equipment and systems
