Saint Anne’s also awarded fourth consecutive “A” grade for patient safety
Fall River, MA – The Leapfrog Group has named Saint Anne’s Hospital, of Fall River, for the first time to its annual list of Top Hospitals.
The announcement came at Leapfrog’s Annual Meeting on December 3 in Arlington, Virginia, which gathered key decision-makers from Leapfrog's network of purchaser members, industry partners, health care stakeholders and national collaborators.
“Recognition by a gold-standard organization such as The Leapfrog Group for high quality, safe patient care is a true honor,” said Craig Jesiolowski, FACHE, president of Saint Anne’s Hospital. “It affirms the collective commitment by our physicians and entire hospital team to deliver the right care at the right time in the right setting, resulting in superior patient outcomes and a satisfying experience for patients and their families.”
Jesiolowski also noted that Steward Health Care’s investments in Saint Anne’s significant facility renovations and expansions have also contributed to higher quality patient care, safety, service, and satisfaction.
“Our newest 40-bed patient pavilion has enabled us to provide private rooms in virtually all areas of the hospital,” said Jesiolowski. “Other important upgrades, such as our state-of-the-art operating rooms and emergency room, demonstrate our focus on providing high-level care, right in the community,” he said.
Saint Anne’s was one of only 90 hospitals nationwide, and seven in Massachusetts, including Saint Anne’s sister hospital, Morton Hospital, in Taunton, to be selected as a Top Hospital. A record number of 1,324 hospitals participated in The Leapfrog Group’s annual survey.
Hospitals reaching this achievement include academic medical centers, teaching hospitals, children’s hospitals, and community hospitals in rural, suburban and urban settings. The selection is based on the results of the Leapfrog Group’s annual hospital survey, which measures hospitals’ performance on patient safety and quality, focusing on three critical areas of hospital care: how patients fare, resource use, and management structures in place to prevent errors.
“The field of hospitals considered for this year’s elite Leapfrog Top Hospital distinction was more competitive than ever. By achieving the Top Hospital accolade, Saint Anne’s has demonstrated exemplary performance across all areas of quality and patient safety that are analyzed on the Leapfrog Hospital Survey. If my family or friends needed care, I’d be comfortable sending them to Saint Anne’s,” said Leah Binder, president and chief executive officer of The Leapfrog Group.
Saint Anne’s Hospital was also awarded a fourth consecutive “A” grade in the Fall 2013 update to the Hospital Safety Score, which rates how well hospitals protect patients from accidents, errors, injuries and infections. The Hospital Safety Score is compiled under the guidance of the nation’s leading experts on patient safety and is administered by Leapfrog. The first and only hospital safety rating to be analyzed in the peer-reviewed Journal of Patient Safety, the Score is designed to give the public information they can use to protect themselves and their families. All ten acute care hospitals in the Steward Health Care System (Steward) received an “A” safety and quality distinction.
“We are incredibly proud of these awards because they recognize our ongoing commitment to health care quality and safety,” said Justine Carr, MD, chief medical officer of Steward. “In the past three years, Steward has invested hundreds of millions of dollars in new services, new physicians, significant infrastructure improvements and new clinical technology to improve the quality of care and patient experience in our hospitals.”
Calculated under the guidance of Leapfrog’s Blue Ribbon Expert Panel, the Hospital Safety Score uses 28 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to produce a single “A,” “B,” “C,” “D,” or “F” score representing a hospital’s overall capacity to keep patients safe from preventable harm. More than 2,500 general U.S. hospitals were assigned scores this fall. A full analysis of the data and methodology used is available on the Hospital Safety Score website.
