Pelvic Floor Services

What is pelvic floor therapy?

Pelvic floor therapy involves disciplined pelvic floor muscle training combined with behavioral modification.

Pelvic floor muscles can be weak, overactive or contract out of sequence with other core muscles, which can cause symptoms of urinary incontinence.  Isolation and training of these muscles has been shown to significantly decrease symptoms of urinary incontinence.  Similarly, with changes in dietary and daily habits, episodes of urinary leaking can be drastically reduced.

Using advanced technology to improve incontinence

Training of pelvic floor muscles can often be facilitated by electromyography (EMG) biofeedback, which is able to detect small changes in muscle activity and facilitate pelvic floor muscle recruitment.  EMG advanced technology allows the therapist to create individualized training programs and monitor progress with reliable and valid objective measurements so patients can see as well as feel the results of therapy.

Our pelvic floor program

At Saint Anne’s Hospital, you can work with a therapist who has advanced training in pelvic floor rehabilitation.  With a combination of pelvic floor muscle re-education and behavioral modification, you can significantly decrease or eliminate episodes of urinary incontinence.

Therapists also help educate and advise patients in making changes in dietary and daily habits that can reduce episodes of urinary leaking.  Services are provided at Saint Anne’s outpatient rehabilitation services location in a comfortable, private setting.
