Since its founding in 1906 by the Dominican Sisters of the Presentation, Saint Anne's Hospital has grown to provide a spectrum of health care services for residents of southeastern Massachusetts and nearby Rhode Island.
From its first days as a 44-bed facility to its current position as a vital member of Steward Health Care, the region's only Catholic community hospital has a long and illustrious history of providing care to all members of the area's population, especially those in need.
The Dominican Sisters founded the hospital on the principles of charity, compassion, community, cultural diversity, and catholicity. These founding principles, coupled with a commitment to provide some of the region's most advanced expertise and facilities, continue to make Saint Anne's a true community hospital.
In its history, Saint Anne's has offered a number of the region's health care "firsts." Notably, since 1976, Saint Anne's has offered the area's most comprehensive cancer care program. This has included excellence in medical oncology and hematology care and many of the area's radiation therapy "firsts," such as intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), high-dose rate (HDR) radiation therapy, image-guided radiation therapy (IMRT), stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS), and radioactive prostate seed implant. Through our affiliation with Brigham and Women's Radiation Oncology, and access to select national clinical trials through the National Cancer Institute, patients are assured of high-quality, state-of-the art cancer care.
Some other "firsts" introduced by Saint Anne's in our region have included:
Saint Anne's prides itself not only on the caliber of its technical care, but especially the quality of the people who make such care possible. Under the founding guidance of the Dominican Sisters and now Steward Health Care, Saint Anne's physicians, nurses, and other health care experts have provided traditional programs and specialty services that respond to the community's unique needs. This tradition continues today.
Every decision - building expansions, nursing education, new medical and surgical techniques, innovative programs and services - is made with our mission and values in mind. It is the staff's commitment to these ideals that has made Saint Anne's highly regarded in the medical and general communities for more than 100 years.
